Project Overview
This project is a narrative-driven exploration and resource management game centered around a lone scrapper/junker in the star system Ross-128, a centralized dumping ground wedged between all existing worlds. As various worlds tear through Ross 128 space-time, you traverse to these rifts and gather valuable scrap from the dimensional rifts. By completing quests given by local shopkeepers the narrative can be progressed, as well as the acquisition of upgrades for various systems such as shopkeeping or ship parts.
Collect junk and scrap from various leaking worlds to upgrade your ship, giving you the ability to explore even further, as well as piecing together your past with help from the NPCs at the various space docks and throughout the other worlds. In the pursuit to find yourself and gain enough money to compete with ever increasing rent, traverse into dangerous collapsing worlds to learn about yourself, the inhabitants of the world, and the nefarious eldritch plot leading to the destruction of these worlds and potentially your own.
Developer Commentary
Critical Density is the largest game project I’ve worked on yet, requiring high operational comprehension and knowledge in every aspect of the game development process. For Critical Density, I am one of two project leaders overseeing our team of 9 developers. Each member within having a varying level of experience. My major roles outside of project leadership include level design, level programming, gameplay design, animation, art, documentation, audio, and more.
The Itch page has extensive information concerning the game, but it doesn’t fully represent the sheer hours of assets, design sheets, and- most of all- the teamwork that has brought this project to life. Working at the head of a large team has given me the opportunity to lead, hone my communication skills, and expand my design thinking. Weekly demo builds have become integral in helping us push the game, and each other, to be the best. Though our game is still in its production stages and has many potential bugs, it very much conveys its ideas and goals.
Critical Density is the culmination of where I am right now as a game designer, and displays my mastery in level design, gameplay design, and production.
